A Labor of Love
For Elyce Arons, there aren’t a lot of differences between gardening and fashion. From the bold and varied colors to the different textures, Elyce found her passion for fashion and produce in the garden at a young age.
From fruits and veggies to forever flowers and fashion, discover how Elyce plans to spend this upcoming season of growth.
How long have you been planting a garden?
We always had a huge vegetable garden growing up, which I loved and missed when I first moved to New York City. Â Â I have been lucky enough to plant a vegetable/flower garden in NY since spring of 2002.
What do you love most about the process?
The life that springs from the ground a couple of weeks after planting seeds. Â It is exhilarating to watch the labor of gardening come to fruition.
What plants are you working with this year?
Tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, all different types of squash, shishito peppers, eggplant, Kale, herbs and lettuces. Â For flowers, I do a lot of wild flowers, Hydrangea, Peonies, Zinnias and Dahlias.
Favorite flower?
My favorite flowers to grow are Zinnias. Â They last forever and come back again and again all summer long.
Favorite vegetable?
Tomatoes and cucumbers.
What's a meal you make from your garden?
Greek salad is my favorite thing to make fresh from the garden with fresh oregano.
How does gardening inspire your work?
The various shades and bold colors in nature almost look unreal to me. Â I am constantly in awe of the deep and varied colors that spring from my garden.
Any advice for aspiring gardeners?
Just start!  You’ll make mistakes, but that is how we learn.  It is truly a labor of love but from which you will benefit so much.
